£30,000

Ecclesiastes 7:16

16 Do not be overrighteous, neither be overwise—why destroy yourself?

Doing what is right is right choice. But sometimes, it is a wise choice to let go one’s right than to fight for it and spend or lose more than what’s right. A man regretted that he spent £30,000 on a failed legal battle “for justice” over a £100 speeding fine. It took him nearly three years fighting the fine and lost. The case involved a “multiplicity of issues” which added to its length.

Have you ever contested a speeding violation? In 2010, I was notified of a speeding violation. Someone told me to challenge it but I chose to pay the speeding penalty anyway. I considered, “How much time would I waste for legal battle? Are my reasons acceptable? Do I have 100% certainty to be absolved? Why not use it as reminder to be more careful in my driving?” I never received any speeding violation notice ever since.

It is fair to say that it is anybody’s right to seek justice. It is anybody’s choice to voice out an opinion. Likewise, it is anybody’s decision to choose not to seek justice and to keep silent instead of voicing out an opinion. It says in Proverbs 17:28, 28Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues. And in Proverbs 26:12, 12Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them.

The man who spent £30,000 on a failed legal battle is a retired engineer. If he paid the £100 speeding fine and used the £29,900 to buy a car and give it as birthday gift to his son, he would have been glad to see his son grateful for his gift. Of course, he did not anticipate such regrettable outcome. Now that he is full of regret, did he realize that his decision to fight for his right exemplifies that even educated people have their share of making foolish decisions? Some battles are beneficial to fight for. Some opinions are worthy to voice out. Likewise, it is wise for believers to spend precious moments to earn eternal treasures like sharing the gospel.

Lord Jesus, give me discernment and witness for You.
