At All Cost

Ecclesiastes 2:13

13 I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness.

The saying, “At all Cost” can be translated ‘at any cost,’ ‘regardless of the difficulty, risk expense, cost or effort involved,’ ‘no matter what,’ ‘in any way possible,’ ‘by any means,’ ‘whatever has to be done or suffered.’ It is something important that has to be done or achieved.  With wisdom from God, Solomon says in Proverbs 16:16, 16How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!

A number of professional athletes earned millions of dollars. With no wisdom on how to handle their money, they would spend their fortune in reckless or prodigal lifestyle. They purchase things they don’t necessarily need. They may invest but earn no profits. One can easily read online about rag-to-riches-to-rag stories of professional players. Their tragic life stories prove that wisdom is indispensable to better living.

In contrast, a couple with two young children were earning minimum wage, and it was barely enough for them. They perceived that with no savings in the bank, they would not be able to support the college education for their children. So, they agreed to complete their college education ‘at any cost’ before their children reach high school. They intentionally limited their expenditure to basic necessities only. After completing their post-secondary education, better opportunities opened for them, they were able to support the college education of their children, and still have a modest lifestyle. It says in Proverbs 4:7, 7The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

When wisdom begins, there’s urgent desire to acquire much wisdom possible at whatever cost available. Wisdom reveals the significance of knowledge in everyday life as well as eternal life. It says in Ephesians 1:17, 17I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

Lord Jesus, please fill me with the Spirit of wisdom and revelation.
