Contentment

Ecclesiastes 4:4

4I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

It narrated in 1 Samuel 18:6-9, 6After David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with timbrels and lyres. 7As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” 8Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. “They have credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?” 9And from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David.

Saul was the reigning king of Israel but he was grudgingly envious of David’s accolade. He was not satisfied with kingship, and he craved to be appreciated like David. He covetously desired to hear victory song for him like David’s. Envious spirit controlled him so that he cannot rejoice with David’s victory but rather tried to destroy David.

When envious spirit manipulates us, we cannot be contented with what we’ve got. We also create our own problems when we aspire for things that others have achieved. Winners and losers in sports competitions are practical proofs that God did not design everyone to accomplish the same achievement. Envious spirit can manipulate us to outperform others, to achieve things more than what others had achieved, but leaves us bitter when we cannot get the appreciation we aspired for.

Exert all effort and pray earnestly to be filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit, and you’ll experience the fullness of life that Christ has promised. Fullness of life in Christ is contentment of life, and we can rejoice with those who rejoice, mourn with those who mourn, live in harmony with one another, not proud, but willing to associate with people of low position, and not conceited. (Romans 12:15-16)

Lord Jesus, prevail in my life for me to experience contentment in life.
