Destroy & Rebuild

Ecclesiastes 3:3b

3b a time to tear down and a time to built.

Nehemiah informed the king of his plan.

It says in Nehemiah 2:4ff, 4The king said to me, “What is it you want?” Then I prayed to the God of heaven, 5and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it…”  8bAnd because the gracious hand of my God was on me, the king granted my requests.  9So I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates and gave them the king’s letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry with me.

The Israelites are God-chosen people. But, when they disobeyed, God drove them out of the Promised Land. The beautiful city of Jerusalem, its walls and temple were destroyed. After 70 years, the Lord made them returned and rebuilt Jerusalem. And then, God allowed invaders to destroy Israel again. Fast-forward 70 years ago, the world witnessed how the nation of Israel started to be rebuilt again. So, what can we learn from destruction and rebuilding of God-chosen people as a nation? It teaches us in Deuteronomy 8:5, 5Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.

As Christians, we should understand that if God did not spare His chosen people Israel from discipline, He would discipline us also when it’s necessary. It says in Hebrews 12:5-8, 5Do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son. 7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.

When life seems crumbling, God may have been rebuilding our spiritual life. Ask God to strengthen your faith to keep trusting Him and His rebuilding activities in your life.

Lord Jesus, please strengthen my faith that I may trust Your ways.
