Enjoy Life

Ecclesiastes 8:15

15 So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.

An article How to Enjoy Life in a Way Most People Don’t suggested various instructions on what to do or what to avoid.  It enumerated the following suggestions: 1. Focus on Yourself; 2. Make Time to Relax; 3. Avoid the News; 4. Nurture Your Positive Relationships; 5. Meet New People; 6. Explore New Places; 7. Keep a Wish List; 8. Try New Things; 9. Spend Money on Experiences, Not Possessions; 10. Cut down Your Junk; 11. Make Time for Gratitude and Appreciation; 12. Track How You’re Spending Your Time; 13. Be Deliberate in Your Choices.

Do the above listed activities guarantee enjoyable life to everyone? Not everyone has the ability or capacity to do them, for sure. The requirement to explore new places is possible for those who have financially stable and people who are healthy and mobile. So, if one cannot follow all the instructions, does it decrease enjoyment of life? If it’s not biblical, think twice!

In comparison, the Lord instructed in Ephesians 6:1-3, 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” To those who have parents, no matter what financial, social or physical status you may have, God promised enjoyment of long life on earth. How about those who were born and have not known their parents?

It says in Galatians 5:22, 22The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace… Would you accept that the Holy Spirit sustains us with joy and peace despite of circumstances? This godly command, “Obey your parents” can only be done by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. There’s joy in obedience to parents when Christ’s Spirit prevails in us.

Lord Jesus, empower me to obey You faithfully.
