Feel Empty

Ecclesiastes 4:6

6Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.

Justin Bieber is having a tough time right now – and not because of his complicated feelings about his ex Selena Gomez or dissatisfaction with his wife Hailey Baldwin and their life in Los Angeles. Actually, he is thankful for all he has, but he feels something is missing from his life that can’t be bought. It’s a missing feeling of happiness. He is very much grateful for his amazing life and especially for Hailey. It’s difficult for him that he can’t just enjoy everything and feel happy. He has been in treatment for this before. He has good days and bad days, but what he struggles with mostly is that he knows he is beyond blessed, but he has days when he feels empty and confused. Getting married didn’t fulfill him, and he just feels overwhelmed. He has so much going for him but he doesn’t feel whole.

True or just rumor, such story practically exemplifies things that this world offers can only gratify our craving temporarily. With physical life, we will always crave or want to try something new. King Solomon may have acquired more things than anybody else: gold, girls, and glory. He was the wisest king in his generation, and he tried anything his wisdom allowed him to ponder upon. And he has proven that material abundance does not monopolize better kind of life. It’s like drinking much water or drinking just enough. One will still go thirsty eventually. Jesus said in John 4:14, 14Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

Christ offers contentment in life. Revelation 21:4 says, 4He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. That’s eternal contentment! Can we experience partial heavenly satisfaction on earth? When the Holy Spirit prevails in our heart, we can sense satisfaction with practical things that God allows us to have. Do we still sense envy? Sure! But when Christ is in control of our life, envy cannot control us anymore. Instead, we seek to glorify Him with our lifestyle.

Lord Jesus, let my life bring glory to Your name!
