Ecclesiastes 7:1

1A good name is better than fine   perfume.

One presidential candidate previously used the term Disenteng Pilipino” (decent or honorable Filipino) to describe his differentiation from the other “foul-mouthed” presidential candidate. The “foul-mouthed” candidate won and installed as president. In the recently concluded mid-term election, supporters of the so-called honorable candidate were also calling the supporters of the “foul-mouthed” president bobotante(stupid electorate). Such name-calling depicts elitist and self-righteous image problem, and this turned off many voters. The team of the so-called ‘decent candidates’ was unable to offer a better option that may address their supposition that they were better than the candidates endorsed by the “foul-mouthed” president. Ironically, they were not able to persuade voters that they were really honorable and decent. Moreover, they did not stop their supporter from ‘foul-mouthing’ or using similar foul languages of the “foul-mouthed” president.

It says in Proverbs 22:1, 1A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” During election, name-calling is commonly used to blemish the good name of other candidates. Candidates try to present themselves as honorable but the true and real essence honorable behavior is really very hard to find among politicians.

Similarly, Christians have been despised for not living a Christ-like lifestyle. Nonetheless, 1 Peter 3:15-17 reminds us, 15But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,  16keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

Lord Jesus, help me live a lifestyle that pleases You.
