Ecclesiastes 8:8b

8bAs no one is discharged in time of war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.

Have you ever written down a New Year’s resolution for yourself? Have you ever attained your New Year’s resolution goals, yet? Surely, it is nice to have optimistic approach in life like New Year’s resolution, but in reality, no mankind has the power to control their future. So, failure in accomplishing New Year’s resolution goals may practically prove that reality.

Similarly, many Christians are disillusioned of believing that they can help themselves become better person first before they would totally commit to serve the Lord. Anything that humans do without faith in Christ is sin. Therefore, righteous efforts that originated from human sinfulness can never be righteous enough to be acceptable to God. Why? God is perfect. He only accepts and approves perfect things. Yet, by the grace of God through faith in Christ, believers are freed from sin. Jesus declares in John 8:34-36, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Believers in Christ are freed from the slavery of sin, and free to live a righteous lifestyle. To be free from sin is not to indulge in sinful lifestyle but desire to do things that would please the Lord. It says in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

So, how should we approach life as believers? We’ve got to admit that we can do nothing acceptable to God without His help. Instead, we should ask Christ to prevail in every aspects of our life and willingly live according to His instructions. How? James 4:15 says, Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” The Scriptures was written to help us determine the Lord’s will through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
