Human Delight

   Ecclesiastes 2:4-8

I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards. 5 I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6 I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. 7 I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. 8 I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired male and female singers, and a harem as well—the delights of a man’s heart.

With wisdom and wealth that God bestowed upon him, King Solomon the author of Ecclesiastes testified that things on earth pleasing to mankind are cravings to serve as temporary filler but not sufficient enough to satisfy hunger and thirst of the heart.

Many Christians have subscribed to luxurious vacation in the hope of finding rest and enjoyment as reward for their hard work. Whatever situation we are in, (vacation or at work), enjoyment of life is a gift from God. It cannot be bought. To spend much money for vacation and return home praising God, that’s God’s gift of life. Luxurious vacation cannot help anyone to escape from problems of life. Be prayerful on how, where and when to take vacation so that it may bring meaning to your life. If God ordains it, vacation would result to praise and worship of God into your heart. Not forced but genuine praise and worship of God that comes from the heart practically proves that you enjoyed your vacation. Jesus declared in John 6:35, 35I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Christ our Creator has added hunger and thirst to our life on earth that can only be satisfied, not with human delights, but when we let Him prevails over our life. Long-lasting contentment in life is experienced when we submit all aspects of our life to Him. Believe or ignore it won’t change what He has declared.  It teaches us in Colossians 1:16, 16For in him (Christ) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

Lord Jesus, help me find contentment in You alone.
