Lifespan

Ecclesiastes 5:18

18This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot.

The Lord said in Genesis 6:3, 3“My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.” The Lord has decided on the lifespan of mankind on earth. The world has been polluted with sinfulness. The great flood in the days of Noah should have been a start of a new generation of humanity but wickedness progressed overtime. The inclination of the human heart is evil all the time (Genesis 6:5). The best preference that originated from human instinct is the best choice for earthly life.

Being mindful how to spend the limited earthly life God has allowed is most appropriate option human can choose. And, when we live earthly life by human instinct, enjoy the fruit of our labor or share them with others, we should not expect God to be pleased with us. How can we please God? During the Transfiguration, the face of Jesus shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Then, Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Him. In his confusion, Peter gave his suggestion to Jesus in Matthew 17:4-5, 4Peter said “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 5While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

Like Peter, human instinct dictates that we know what is best for Christ. We want to impress Him, to do something spectacular for Him. Yet, God the Father requires us not to impress him, but to listen to His precious Son Jesus Christ and do what He says. So, to expect our work to be acceptable to the Lord, first, we need to listen intentionally and wait for the prompting of the Spirit of Christ. Psalm 46:10 says, 10“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Lord Jesus, help me carefully listen and obey Your instructions.
