Never Go

Ecclesiastes 2:1

1 I said to myself, “Come now, I will   test you with pleasure to find out   what is good.” But that also proved   to be meaningless.

I will never go to Mexico again,’ Jason claims. His scar on the top of his head reminds a recent trip to Mexico. “It was the ideal vacation we’d been waiting for. And, it was a nightmare,” he recalls. Jason and his brother took their mother to Playa Del Carmen for her 50th birthday. Photos and videos show them smiling, enjoying their time on the Caribbean beach. But joy turned to injury and anger three days later from a brutal attack and robbery. Jason decided to explore the nightlife of the popular tourist destination alone. Earlier, they took local taxis with other passengers in them. That’s why he felt safe when a taxi gave him a ride back to the hotel that night already had a passenger in the backseat. He lost consciousness after the passenger struck him in the head. Bloody and battered, his phone, jewellery and cash stolen. “If people ask me if they should go to Mexico, I would ask them, why? For a little vacation, five, seven days, there are lots of other places you can go,” Jason says. It is really important to understand that you’re a guest in another country. So, you’ve got to be careful anywhere you go in the same way that you would be at home.

Exploring earthly pleasure in strange places has consequences. Earthly pleasure is often an enticement for danger. It says in Proverbs 21:17, 17Whoever loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and olive oil will never be rich. With excessive wealth and power, King Solomon understood much about pleasure and its consequences. Christ warned not only worries of life but also riches and pleasures could hinder spiritual growth. He said in Luke 8:14, 14The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

Did Christ forbid wealth and pleasure? No, but like worries of life, wealth and pleasure affect our lifestyle.

Lord Jesus, help me to find pleasure not from the world but in obeying You.
