No Harm

Ecclesiastes 8:5

Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.

The effects of ‘obedience’ and ‘wise’ are properly arranged in the same sentence. Obedience results to no harm, and to be wise is to know the proper time and procedure. And, to obey is not some foolish blind obedience but to know very wisely when and how to obey commands. It states beforehand in Ecclesiastes 8:4, Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him, “What are you doing?” This verse sheds light to the pronoun ‘his’ in verse 5 which pertains to the king whose word is supreme, and to obey the king’s command is a wise decision. The subjects of the king know when and how to obey his commands wisely.

Similarly, to obey Christ the King of kings is a very wise decision. The Lord Jesus is the truth and His words are true and supreme. Whatever He promises or predicts will absolutely happen. He said in Revelation 22:12, “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.” Furthermore in the Gospel of Luke, the Lord Jesus told a parable of a shrewd manager who was terminated because he wasted the money of his boss. It reminds us that the Judgment Day is coming sooner or later and the Lord will terminate our pilgrim in this world. Everything we have (our life, time and talent) will surely be evaluated, if we have used them properly and wisely or wasted them uselessly. It is wise to be filled and empowered by the Spirit of Christ for us to live a lifestyle pleasing to the Lord. Our lifestyle can only produce eternal treasures with and through the help of Christ our Lord.

Jesus Christ the Lord of lords said in Luke 16:10-12, Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

Lord Jesus, help me use wisely my life and resources You gave me.
