People  Power

Ecclesiastes 1:11

11 No one remembers the former generations, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them.

The message of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to the 32nd commemoration of the 1986 EDSA People Power—“A people’s courage and resolve can alter the course of our nation’s history. The People Power Revolution has become the enduring symbol of our determination to fight for what is right and – during our country’s most crucial and trying times – to defend and uphold our cherished democratic values. Let us further enrich our democracy by empowering our citizenry, defending their rights and strengthening the institutions that safeguard their freedom.”

Some Filipinos celebrate to remember the 1986 EDSA people power. Others remember it as political maneuver. Does the Bible promote people power? Absalom revolted against King David. As David escaped, he said in 2 Samuel 15:25-26, 25If I find favor in the Lord’s eyes, he will bring me back and let me see it and his dwelling place again. 26 But if he says, ‘I am not pleased with you,’ then I am ready; let him do to me whatever seems good to him.”

Some Israelite leaders supported Absalom, and did not remember that David was the Lord’s anointed king of Israel. Absalom and those who connived with him ended losers because God favoured King David. It says in Romans 13:4, 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

Does the passage mean that we submit even to oppressive authorities? All authorities attract oppositions. God is love but not everyone likes Him. By faith in Christ, we should be praying for authorities, not because we agree with them or their policies but because we believe that God could use them as His instruments for our good. Can we still trust that God has the best plan for our betterment if He allows good or bad authorities to rule?

Lord Jesus, please remind me to keep praying for authorities.
