Ecclesiastes 12:12

12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much, but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep.

Who has an authority to talk about sleeping habits of the rich if not the richest person ever known in the history of mankind? Who can testify of the sleeping pattern of hard working people if not the laborer himself?

Once upon a time, a terrible storm came on, and the rain poured down in torrents. Suddenly a knocking was heard at the city gate, and what a sight the rain and the wind had made her look. And yet she said that she was a real princess. “Well, we’ll soon find that out,” thought the old queen. She said nothing, went into the bedroom, took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea. On this the princess had to lie all night. In the morning she was asked how she had slept. “Oh, very badly!” said she. Heaven only knows what was in the bed, but I was lying on something hard. It’s horrible!” Now they knew that she was a real princess because she had felt the pea right through the twenty mattresses. Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that.

It may just be fable but it illustrates a weird problem the rich may experience every night. To have sweet sleep is not freely given to the rich. It’s a fair share of the hard working laborers. Each morning a laborer wakes up and may wonder of his next employment. After whole day work, he may temporarily forget his financial problem with sweet sleep. Can we have material sufficiency and still get sweet sleep? It is possible. The Lord Jesus said in Matthew 6:33-34, 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Christ the author of life knows that we worry about many things.

He promises all things we need including sweet sleep, if we just let Him reigns in our heart. How? When His righteousness becomes guidelines for our lifestyle, Christ reigns in us.

Lord Jesus, reign in me that I will live a righteous lifestyle.
