Ecclesiastes 5:6

6Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. And do not protest to the temple messenger, “My vow was a mistake.” Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands?

Believers can fall into a trap of making unwarranted promises. Not a few have promised, “I will serve God after I acquired the things (material, financial, profession) I dreamed to have!” Did you know that human promises cannot impress the Lord? Actually, God is not amused with anyone who does not fulfill his/her promises, and it’s not pleasant when God disciplines a person who frequently makes promises but cannot fulfill them. Our Creator knew our limitations and capabilities. We don’t need to tell or promise God what we wish to do for Him in the future. In His eyes, activities, performances, and services to God with human origin are sinful. Just imagine yourself buying expensive groceries then throw them in a garbage bin. God does not delight in anything that originated from human effort including promises, why?

When the Lord Jesus was asked in John 6:28-29, 28 “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” It also teaches in Hebrews 11:6, 6And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

See? Efforts produced by faith in Christ are pleasant to God and are rewarded. Human efforts could be honorable in the eyes of other believers but God determines which efforts are products of faith in Christ. By faith, Christ’s Spirit empowers us to know, determine and perform activities that would please God. God is holy and perfect, and He is pleased by holiness and perfection. It says in Romans 15:16, 16The Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Sin made us imperfect. When we believed in Christ, His Spirit sanctifies, consecrated and set us apart for His purposes, and we become holy and perfect pleasing to God.

Lord Jesus, sanctify and inspire me for Your glory.
