Ecclesiastes 2:14

14 The wise have eyes in their heads, while the fool walks in the darkness.

In 2010, 19-year-old Sam and his friends were drinking wine when Sam saw a slug crawling across the patio. He leapt up and asked his mates if he should eat it. “Eat it, I dare you,” one of them told him. Swallowing that slug was a split-second decision that has affected Sam’s life and the lives of those around him ever since. Over the next few days he started experiencing severe leg pain and was taken to hospital where he was eventually diagnosed with rat lungworm. The parasite is found in rodents, but snails and slugs are infected when they eat rat faeces that carries the worm. He then fell into a coma and became quadriplegic. Sam had been a promising rugby player.

It says in Proverbs 20:1, 1Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Many people could testify about crazy and terrible things they do when drunk. Nobody has ever testified to have made wise decision when drunk. Motorists who drive while drunk are called impaired drivers. Most highway accidents are caused by alcohol impaired drivers. To be impaired is to be weakened, diminished, damaged, functioning poorly or inadequately, deficient or incompetent.

True friends care about the well-being of their friends. It says in Proverbs 12:26, 26The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. The human sinful nature resists or doesn’t like anyone who rebukes but gladly desires companions who flatter. Most conversations among drunkards are about bragging, swagger, or empty boasting of themselves. Drunkards cannot readily handle discreet and prudent decisions. Yet, even non-drunkards occasionally entertain foolish and silly conversations.

We are reminded in Ephesians 5:3-4,  3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

Lord Jesus, please help to live righteously and truly care for friends.
