The Branch

 Ecclesiastes 3:2b

2b a time to plant and a time to uproot

Expert farmers should know the right timing when to plant and when to uproot. Some vegetables are harvested by uprooting the whole plant. Other plants will only be uprooted when they stop bearing fruits. What can we learn from planting and uprooting in relation to spiritual life?

The Lord Jesus explained it very well in John 15:1ff, 1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful… 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

While many would not like to hear the end result of branches that bear no fruit, the Lord Jesus declared it clearly for believers’ sake. He is the Truth, and tells the truth to warn believers from unfruitfulness. He wants us to be fruitful. Just as wise farmers prune fruitful branches, the Lord removes from us unproductive lifestyles for us to be more fruitful spiritually. Fruitfulness is the ultimate purpose for grapevines. Likewise, spiritual fruitfulness is the most blessed lifestyle that our Creator has designed for believers. In contrast, spiritual unfruitfulness is the most undesirable situation for anyone, and eternal fire is prepared for unfruitfulness.

Is it possible for believers to be unfruitful and still pleasing to the Lord? If unfruitfulness is pleasing to Him, He would not warn what happens to unfruitfulness. So, how can believers be fruitful? If we remain or abide in Him, the Lord assured spiritual fruitfulness. When His teachings become our guiding principles in life, He will give us what we ask Him because our desire is the same as His desire.

Lord Jesus, help me abide with You and put into practice Your teachings.
