Twelve Stones

Ecclesiastes 3:5

5a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing.

Joshua ordered twelve men, one from each  Israelite tribe, in Joshua 4:5-7: 5Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 7tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.

A collection of stones formed into monuments or landmarks represents harmony at the time of gathering. Scattering stones signifies discord or war. When believers gather in assembly, it signifies harmony. Discord will scatter an assembly. The church is an assembly of believers. In harmonious church, Christ prevails as Lord. When sinful nature prevails in a church, there’s chaos.

Our Lord Jesus encourages us in Luke 16:9, I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings…  He also instructs in Matth.ew 6:20, Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… And in Matthew 28:19-20, Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

Making disciples is an opportunity to make friends and gather eternal treasures simultaneously. It’s very important, if you are sure of your eternal dwelling. Time is coming nearer when Christ comes again and opportunities to make disciples will eventually come to an end. How much eternal treasure have you earned yet? Do you have any idea? We prefer gathering than scattering, don’t we?

Lord Jesus, please empower me to make many disciples.
