Verbal Attack

Ecclesiastes 2:3

3 I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.

For one Mexican teenager, a verbal attack on a cartel leader seems to have resulted in tragic consequences. A social media star known online as El Pirata De Culiacan, has died after he was shot on at a bar. He was 17. He became famous for his hard-partying lifestyle, which included excessive drinking and clashed with his youthful, baby-faced appearance. His antics brought more than one million followers to his Facebook page, and he was also active on Instagram. He also appeared in music videos, which received millions of views on the YouTube channel of his friend. In a clip posted to YouTube, Rosales directed a slur at Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the man who leads the New Generation cartel under the alias El Mencho. While authorities have not yet connected the teenager’s death to El Mencho, they are currently investigating the possibility of that link.

The undesirable incident happened to the Mexican teenager could possibly be a by-product of excessive drinking or he might have been drunk with his social media popularity. Whatever controlled him, verbal aggression that led to tragic end, proves no wisdom. King Solomon tried cheering himself with wine and discovered it as foolishness. Wisdom guided him.

It says in Ephesians 5:17-18, 17 Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. What does God imply when He prohibits us not to be foolish and not to get drunk but commands us to understand His will and be filled with the Spirit?

When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we will understand His will. His Spirit enables us to understand that getting drunk is foolishness that possibly ends tragically. In contrast, when filled with the Holy Spirit, the result will be love, joy, peace as opposed to foolishness.

Lord Jesus, please fill and empower me with Your Spirit always.
