Achan

Ecclesiastes 9:18

18Wisdom is better than weapons of war,   but one sinner destroys much good.

The Israelites were victorious against the Canaanites when they relied upon the Lord; but, they were defeated when one man sinned. It says in Joshua 7:20-26, 20 Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: 21 When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.” 22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath. 23 They took the things from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites and spread them out before the Lord. 24 Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold bar, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor25 Joshua said, “Why have you brought this trouble on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.” Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them.

In this present world, we frequently engage in spiritual battles. Spiritual battles are instrumental to shake and test the strength of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. But we can be victorious, if we completely rely upon the Lord. It says in 1 Corinthians 1:24, But to those whom God has called… Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. And in 1 Corinthians 1:30, Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God.

Spiritual battles could be triggered by our very own sinful inclination. Our human instinct is to disregard the Lord and not satisfied with his sufficient grace; we can be tempted to acquire more property, seek popularity or crave for power. But with strong faith in Jesus Christ, we won’t give in, even when temptation deceptively presents itself before us.

Lord Jesus, increase my faith and help me satisfied with Your sufficient grace.
