Servant or Child?

Ecclesiastes 10:16

16 Woe to the land whose king was a servant and whose princes feast in the morning.

Could a nation face catastrophe because of the background credential of its king? NIV Bible translated “king was a servant while some Bible versions translated “king is a child.” The added phrase “whose princes feast” can be translated as “whose officials feast.” When “princes” or “officials” feast or get drunk in the morning, they have no respect of their king. It also connotes that “servant king” or “child king” could not demand respect from his officials. When officials do not respect their king, it implies leadership incompetency of their king, which is not very advantageous to his nation.

Whenever a state of emergency is declared, critics would be very quick to blame incompetence of leaders. And, during election campaigns, candidates promise how they would solve critical problems and hope to win the heart of electorates. Electing leaders is very crucial to the state of a nation, organization or church.

It says in Ephesians 6:18, 18Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

As believers, we pray for everyone; but, it’s very important to pray for leaders. Pray for government officials that they may have godly wisdom to address concerns of our nation. If you are employed, pray for your employers; if you are a student, pray for your teachers. And, we should always pray for church leaders. Always pray for godly wisdom for leaders of any institution that you are associated with; and when problems still happen, trust that the Lord would use them for your own good.

Lord Jesus, please give wisdom to leaders of institutions we associate with.
