Sustain

Psalm 3:5

5I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.

More than a decade ago, we travelled to East Asia as family when we heard God’s call for international missions. We only have $300 as pocket money for ourselves. Our mission contact proposed that we should delay our travel because there was no apparent source of income at our destination. I responded, “If you can provide us a place where we can lay our head at night, we will come on the agreed date of arrival.” We have already booked our flight at that time, and to postpone our travel means additional expenditure for flight tickets.

We flew in at the agreed date of arrival. On the first night, we were booked at a hotel. The following day we travelled to our destination by bus. Our expenditure for two days amounted to almost $100. Meaning, we only have $200 left in our pocket when we arrived at our destination.

We spent exactly 30 months in the mission field without spending the $200 pocket money until we returned home. That wonderful mission experience practically proved to us that when God calls us for his mission purposes, he sustains us, for sure.

The Lord had said to Abram Genesis 12:1-3, 1Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.

God promised the 75-year-old Abram to bless and make him into a great nation. The Lord changed Abram’s name to Abraham (it means, father of many nations.) Believers are counted as children of Abraham, the father of faithful believers. Just as God provided for Abraham until he died, God sustains all obedient believers so that we can sleep well at night.

Lord Jesus, increase my faith in you!
