Two Boxers

Ecclesiastes 7:4

4The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.

Once upon a time, there were two boxers who came from poor family. Both were given similar opportunities in boxing and paid much money for their championship fights. One boxer spent his money with night life, gambling, luxury items, and leisure that he did not experienced when he was still poor. After few years of extravagant, prodigal and reckless lifestyle, his body deteriorated. He lost his speed and punching power, dethroned as champion, lost all his savings, friends and relatives, and worst, he was imprisoned for a crime he did while drunk.

In contrast, the other boxer very wisely invested the money he earned from boxing, bought a house and other necessary items for his parent and siblings. He also came to believe and accept Christ as his Lord and Savior. Can you agree that this boxer was blessed because he respected and honored his parents? It says in Ephesians 6:1-2, 1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—3“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.

One can easily observe if a child is wise or not. To obey and honor parents is godly command. When a child obeys and honors his parents, he has God-given wisdom. The tendency of every child is to disobey authorities. Are you surprised that many children spend many hours playing video games and ignore when their parents ask them to help with household chores?

Of course, they haven’t gained understanding, just yet. But when they become responsible adults and plan for their own lives, they will eventually realize that they have to use their precious times in more productive ways. Would a wise God give great opportunities to disrespectful and irresponsible person who disobey His instructions? God has prepared great opportunities for responsible believers who listen and obey His commands.

Lord Jesus, please grant wisdom to our children.
