Chaff

Psalm 1:4

4Not so the wicked! They are like   chaff that the wind blows away.

Why did the Psalmist compare the wicked to chaff that the wind blows away?

During wheat harvest, grains are separated from chaff. In the old traditional way of separating the grain from the chaff, harvesters dry their harvest under the sun. Afterward, they tossed it into the air; the wind blows the chaff away while the grain falls onto the ground and gathered into containers to be brought into the barn. The chaff would be burned or turned into dust.

Similarly, at the end times, God will separate believers to be taken into his heaven while the wicked will be thrown into the eternal fire. Interestingly, the Lord used similar illustration of chaff that the wind blows away to warn the Israelites in Jeremiah 13:24-25, 24“I will scatter you like chaff driven by the desert wind. 25This is your lot, the portion I have decreed for you,” declares the Lord, “because you have forgotten me and trusted in false gods.”

Sadly, the Israelites ignored the prophecy of Jeremiah; they were scattered and exiled. The Israelites were chosen nation of God, but the Lord disciplined them for their wickedness. The decrees and commands of God are instructions for believers to benefit from blessings included in obedience to him. But to disobey his decrees simply means disregard of his blessings. Moreover, disregard of his blessings and disobedience to God won’t be ignored. Punishment awaits wickedness.

Whether we obey or disobey the Lord, we don’t control our destiny. God had decreed punishment for wickedness and rewards for obedience to him. It is foolish to disregard the Lord, but it is wise to obey him. Instinctively, we resist godly things. This is why we need godly wisdom and stronger faith in Christ to understand and follow godly instructions. Can you believe that the Lord blesses us practically when we obey him?

If you have a hint of doubt about it, seriously pray for increase of faith and godly wisdom, and you will surely favorably benefit from the grace, goodness and love of God when you obey him.

Lord Jesus, please increase my faith in you.
