Confidant

  Psalm 3:2

2 Many are saying of me, “God will   not deliver him.”

King David had personally proven that kingship attracts different levels of problems as compared to his life as simple shepherd. Aside from other nations attacking Israel, Israelite leaders, relatives, friends and even his own sons caused him difficult problems. His counselor Ahithophel conspired with Absalom and tried to take over the throne. In those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. That was how both David and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel’s advice.

After King David fled, his son Absalom asked Ahithophel for advice. Ahithophel suggested that he would choose 12,000 men and pursue David while he is weary and weak.  The plan seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel. But Absalom wanted to hear the opinion Hushai the Arkite as well. Hushai the Arkite was David’s confidant who spied on Ahithophel. Hushai advised Absalom to gather all Israelites and lead them into battle. Absalom and all the men of Israel said in 2 Samuel 17:14, 14“The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.

The rebellion of Absalom against his father was a failure. King David trusted in the Lord in every situation. God honored the faith of David. That should inspire us to trust God as well, in every difficult problem that may bother us. Surely, it is very easy to be discouraged when individuals close to us are the very people who cause us troubles. The faithfulness of God is best proven during difficult times and not just during trouble-free moments. Everyone has problem but not everyone trusts God. Difficult moments reveal who are faithful to the Lord and expose pretenders. So, when difficult times weaken our faith in the Lord, we should keep in mind to fervently seek empowerment from Christ our Lord.

Lord Jesus, help me grow stronger in my faith in you.
