Psalm 11:5

6On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot..

Injustice was terrible in Sodom and Gomorrah and their wickedness so grievous that cannot be ignored in. The Lord revealed to Abraham that Sodom and Gomorrah will be destroyed. Probably because at that time his nephew Lot was living in Sodom, Abraham appealed if the Lord could spare Sodom. The Lord said that he won’t destroy Sodom if there were at least ten righteous people there. And, it narrated in Genesis 19:24-26, 24The Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. 25Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. 26But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Burning sulfur destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Tragically, the wife of Lot looked back while Sodom was burning, and she turned into a pillar of salt. Scholars speculate that the wife of Lot may have been hesitant to leave Sodom because of material abundance she enjoyed at that time. Anyway, Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed as warning that this material world will be destroyed by fire.  It warned in 2 Peter 3:7, 7The present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

This material world can be attractive but the Lord will burn it one day, why? By faith, we have firm confidence that the Lord had already prepared new heaven and new earth that are far more attractive for us to enjoy for all eternity.

Lord Jesus, help me visualize your plan for me.
