Psalm 12:6

6And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times.

Gold bars and silver bars that are sold in the market are marked 99.99% because they are not 100% pure gold or pure fine silver. Accordingly, pure fine silver is too soft to be used in jewelry making. Likewise, pure gold is also soft that it can be hammered without breaking; it is and highly malleable that it can be pressed out of shape and won’t crack. In order to strengthen and in some cases, to enhance color, other metals are added to malleable pure gold or soft fine silver.

Purified silver and refined gold have higher value than silver ore or gold ore. To refine gold and purify silver, they are cleansed from impurities and separated from other materials. And finally, the silver or gold is placed and melted to be purified and refined in a crucible or a container at very high temperatures.

In the generation of King David, purified silver and refined gold must have been very valuable as symbol of social status. The more gold or silver they have, the higher their social standing could have been. King David described the words of the Lord as flawless and compared to purified silver and refined gold. He highly valued the words of the Lord like valuable pure gold and fine silver. He declares in Psalm 1:1-3, 1Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law, day and night. 3That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.

Do you feel blessed when you prosper? We are blessed and prosper in whatever we do if we delight and meditate on the law of the Lord, day and night. Can you believe it?

Lord Jesus, help me delight and meditate on your law.
