Discipline

Psalm 6:1

1Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.

A video was uploaded online. Two police officers knocked at the door. A woman opened the door and asked why.

“We are checking on 911 Call about child abuse,” the police explained.

“I did not dial 911!” the woman said.

“I did.” The boy next to the woman said. “She hit me with this belt three times!”

“His teacher told me that he frequently skips classes!” the woman explained.

The police officer took the boy few steps away from the woman and asked, “Did your mother spank you in the past?”

“No!” the child answered.

“Who told you to call 911?” the officer inquired.

“My classmates! They told me to dial 911 if mother punishes me for skipping classes! It’s child abuse!” the child confidently explained.

The police officer looked seriously at the boy and said, “If you skip classes again and you dial 911 when your mother disciplines you for skipping classes, I will come, and I myself will discipline you with this belt. Don’t dial 911 when you know that you are at fault. Understand?”

Have you read the law that protects children from parental abuse? Is it considered as parental abuse to discipline children for wayward behavior?

Proper or not, the Criminal Code (Canada) defines what could be punished. Be careful of how you may discipline children. Naturally, the instinctive behavior of children practically exhibits our human natural tendencies. Parents discipline wayward children.

Similarly, when the Lord deems we behave awfully, he disciplines us for our own good. Hebrews 12:10-11 says, 10Our parents disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

Lord Jesus, guide parents to lovingly discipline children.
