Psalm 10:14
14But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
They heard Christ declared that no prophet is accepted in his hometown. The people in the synagogue were not grieved; they were furious; they tried to throw him off the cliff, but he walked through the crown and went on his way because his time to die has not yet come. Christ reminded them of what happened to the widow in 1 Kings 17:12-14, 12“As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.” 13Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”
When Elijah prophesied that God provides for the widow and her son, this event in the region of Sidon practically exemplified what it says in Psalm 146:9, 9The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow.
God sustains the needs of widows and orphans. It reflects deeper understanding of good works that the Lord approves when we help widows and orphans. It says in 2 Corinthians 9:10-11, 10He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
Lord Jesus, bless me to be generous even more.
