Warning

Psalm 2:10

10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.

It is an aspiration of many to become rulers, but not everyone is fit to rule. What qualifies a ruler? Some individuals force or manipulate situations to become rulers. There are rulers who are legally elected. And still there are privileged personalities who inherited their position as rulers.

Which of those ways of becoming a ruler is considered as God-established authority? How do you interpret what Apostle Paul advised in Romans 13:1? 1Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

Did God establish authority for all legally elected, inherited or manipulated authority? What is the scope of God-established authority? Does it include authority over a nation, business establishment, home, school, church or any organization of some sort?

God is God of order. Any legal authority is considered god-established authority. How should we behave toward rulers who abuse their authority? It narrated in Leviticus 10:1-3, 1Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.

Aaron and his sons were chosen and given authority as priest of God. But Nadab and Abihu abused their authority, and the Lord punished them. Similarly, we are commanded to respect authorities. It says in Romans 12:19, 19Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

Rulers are warned not to abuse their authority; God has proper places suitable to behaviors. Ruler or not, behaviors have appropriate reward or punishment from the Lord.

Lord Jesus, bless our leaders with godly wisdom.
