Psalm 12:4

⁴those who say, “By our tongues we will prevail; our own lips will defend us—who is lord over us?”

During court hearing, the lawyer of the defendant was heard giving instruction, “Keep your tongue shut,” to the person sitting next to him. And then, he proceeded to interview the witness of the crime and said, “You are the only witness when the crime occurred!” “Yes, sir!” the witness responded. “Do you recognize the person who committed crime? If so, point in this room where he sits.” the lawyer required.

“That’s him! That’s the person who committed the crime!” the witness pointed to person who sat next to the defendant lawyer’s chair. “Are you sure? Are you not mistaken?” the lawyer wanted the witness to make sure. “That’s him! That’s the person who committed the crime, the one you instructed to keep his tongue!” the witness confidently asserted.

“The person you are pointing at is not my client. My client, the defendant is sitting at the back!” the lawyer signaled his client to stand up from the back of the court room. The witness was caught lying.

Confused individuals who are reckless in their words have placed themselves in trouble. Truly, the tongue is very small part of the body but it can cause the whole body in trouble or otherwise. It teaches us in James 3:5-6, ⁵The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. ⁶The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. …Everything said in a court room is recorded and can be used for or against the speaker. Most often, we do not put so much importance in what we say. But as children of God, we have to be aware that others are observing our behavior including the very words we say. Do you think God records every word we say also?

Lord Jesus, help me to be cautious with my words.
