Psalm 10:7
7The mouth of the wicked is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.
Politicians may utter threats or cause trouble and evil against anyone who may oppose them. Just to win enough votes, politicians may promise anything under the sun. It is presumed that politicians are liars, and it caused not a few individuals to abhor politics. Others don’t want to be allied with politicians or anything associated in politics. Yet most often, electorates would vote for politicians whom they presume as lesser evil. And politicians are authorities of their nation.
As Christians, what is biblical stance or perspective about politicians who are supposed to be full of lies and threats? It is prescribed in Romans 13:1-2, 1Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
Rebellion against governing authorities is rebellion against what God instituted. God rewards obedience to his commands including submission to governing authorities. But no matter how politicians may behave, God decreed punishment for wickedness, politicians or not, governing authorities or not. It urged us in 1 Timothy 2:1-4, 1I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
It favors our nation to have responsible governing authorities, right? So, we should prayerfully ask God to give wisdom to governing authorities.
Lord Jesus, help me pray for authorities regularly.
