Psalm 17:8
8Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.
The phrase “apple of my eye” refers to something or someone that one cherishes above all others. Originally, it was an idiom referring to the pupil of the eye. In modern usage, it signifies a person who holds a special place in someone’s heart and cherishes above all others. In Hebrew, the “apple” or pupil of the eye is intensely guarded. The Lord guards over Israel: “He kept him as the apple of His eye.” Israel’s welfare is as precious to God as eyesight is to a person. When King David said, “Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings,” he anchored his trust in the Lord. Yet God won’t merely watched over his people. He cherishes us at the most sensitive point of divine affection.
Moreover, God wants us to live responsibly, How? We keep his commandments and guard his teachings as the apple of our eye. The pupil of the eye must be shielded from harm; likewise, wisdom must be shielded from neglect. Living by faith is obedience to God. Our spiritual growth depends on treasuring God’s instruction similar to protecting our vision. To cherish wisdom is to safeguard one’s “eye,” whereas to indulge wickedness is to stumble into darkness.
We can also appropriate the “apple of the eye” promise of God with confidence in his jealous protection. We should not compromise with seemingly acceptable lessons but have no biblical basis. Our challenge is to regularly practice God’s Word and avoid distractive issues. Knowledge of the Scripture is essential but only when we internalize and put into practice will the promises of God comes into reality. It advises in Proverbs 7:1-2, 1Keep my words and store up my commands within you. 2Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
Lord Jesus, let me enjoy my Christian life as I practice your teachings.
