Psalm 16:7

7I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.

DIY (Do-it-yourself) stores challenge creativity. If you can “do-it-yourself,” your personal fulfillment can be greater. Initially, the DIY approach advertises repair or upgrade of home projects. Overtime, DIY has widely marketed different kinds of repairs like vehicles, furniture or office equipment. DIY approach to cooking delicious cuisine or baking pastries had been experimented during the Covid years. Certainly, DIY in most life activities is gratifying. DIY gratifies the ego of “if-you-can-why-can’t-I?” attitude. DIY performance lessens reliance upon others. It’s a “solve-your-own-problem” sort of outlook. Someone termed DIY as “Minimum expenditure with maximum result.”

Sadly, the DIY mindset lessens dependence on God. They do not need to pray for a house or a new car. If they have good credit line, they just ask a realtor to help them buy a house. They ask a car dealer to help them have a new car. They do not need to pray for safety when they are driving. The insurance agency will pay damages incurred in accidents. They do not need to pray for safety at home. The police will take charge of that. They do not need to pray about old-age concerns. Their retirement benefit secured their future. What is their need for God then? They think God must be very happy now because they do not give him any trouble. They seldom ask him for anything.

The Psalmist had a clearer understanding of God. With or without problem, he praised the Lord as his counsellor. He trusted God to instruct him when he had an idea or no idea of what to do. He depended on God to readily help him even more in the future instead of having a “Do-it-yourself” attitude of this present generation.

Lord Jesus, I need your counsel always.
