Psalm 18:8
8Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it.
Can you visualize an angry God? To maintain the fire, woods were thrown into the furnace. Each wood thrown into the fire was consume. Possibly, King David was sitting next to furnace in winter to warm himself, and the Lord may have inspired him to imagine what happens when God is angry. King David imagined that when word comes out of the mouth of the Lord, it is like fire that consumes anything in its path. Like fire in the furnace that consumes the wood thrown into it, the Lord can destroy his enemies. Intentionally, King David relied upon the Lord to defeat his enemies.
Was David inspired also by the song of Moses in Exodus 15:7-8? 7In the greatness of your majesty you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger; it consumed them like stubble. 8By the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up. The surging waters stood up like a wall; the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.
Moses led the Israelites, and they escaped out of the Egyptian slavery. Pharaoh and his soldiers chased the fleeing Israelites. They followed when the Israelites crossed the Red Sea on dry ground. But the Lord caused the Egyptians to be drowned and died. Anyone who opposes what God has planned will be likened to the Egyptians who died in sea while chasing the Israelites. They won’t escape his wrath. The Lord instructed in 1 Chronicles 16:22, 22Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm.
The Lord warned it clearly but anyone who ignored his warning suffered the wrath of God. We pray that the Holy Spirit may enlighten us to discern and follow when he warns us. The Lord is a consuming fire. Anyone who opposes him cannot escape.
Lord Jesus, help me follow you diligently.
